The Lament of Icarus

Oil on Canvas - 18x20

Appropriation of 1898 Herbert James Draper

The painting depicts Icarus, who crafted wings of feathers and wax in an attempt to escape captivity. Despite knowing the risks, he flew too close to the sun, causing the wax to melt and leading to his fatal fall.

Icarus’ fate invites reflection on the nature of ambition and consequence. Was his downfall the result of reckless disregard for danger, or was it an act of defiant courage—choosing to embrace the joy of flight, even if only for a fleeting moment?
